Road Trip to the East Coast (October 2002)

Confederate artillery position east of Dunker Church. The East Woods and Miller Cornfield are in the distance.

Miller Cornfield, site of the harshest fighting of the battle's first phase. Hood's Texans marched into Union artillery fire through the field's fully grown corn.

Bloody Lane, a strong position, at first, for Confederates facing Union troops marching through the fields at right. The Mumma farm is visible to the far right.

A view of the Bloody Lane's bend. Union troops would eventually flank this position, and this sunken road would become a death trap.

The stone bridge over which Union General Ambrose Burnside would send his corps against Toombs's Georgians. This view is from the Georgians' imposing position.

Beth standing on the stone bridge. Ever since the battle, the structure has been known as Burnside Bridge.
